Associate Attorney
1. Position Summary
The Associate Attorney will work along the firm’s principal attorney, associate attorney, and affiliated counsel to: (i) assist clients with resolving disputes involving privacy, patent, trademark, and copyright issues, including federal and TTAB litigation, as well as mediation and arbitration proceedings and informal negotiation; (ii) participate in and manage patent and trademark prosecution before the USPTO.
2. Duties & Responsibilities
a. Dispute Resolution
i. Actively assist and participate with IP and commercial litigation in federal courts and ADR activities, including assisting with day-to-day tasks associated with case management, preparing pleadings, briefs (e.g., Rule 12, 56, 59, 65 etc.), preparing and responding to Rule 33, 34, 36, 37, and 45 discovery instruments, assisting with interviewing fact and expert witnesses, conducting and defending fact and expert depositions, and collaborating with internal and outside counsel with the foregoing
ii. Prepare and review correspondence, arguments, memos, and briefs in support of litigation
iii. Assist in internal document collection and production
b. General
i. Meets internal and external deadlines, has successful time management, including during periods of prolonged intense work during and after regular office hours
ii. Fulfills firm administrative responsibilities, including, but not limited to, timekeeping and billing requirements
iii. Assists and supports the firm with general administrative duties such as processing certain deliveries, and special projects related to IP matters as assigned
3. Skills & Competencies
a. Proficient knowledge of U.S. patent, trademark, and copyright law
b. Must have excellent written and oral communication skills; detail oriented
c. Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to perform well under pressure, manage priorities, and meet deadlines
d. Proficiency with Westlaw research
e. Exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality of client information
f. Work independently, taking initiative to move projects to conclusion
g. Ability to engage in active listening – giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate
h. Ability to deal calmly and effectively with high stress situations, including unfavorable situations and/or when constructive criticism is given
i. Interest in e-commerce, including underlying technologies, market trends, and evolving case law concerning jurisdiction
4. Qualifications & Prior Experience
a. Bachelor’s Degree and Juris Doctor
b. Licensed to practice law in Illinois and admitted to practice before the NDIL
c. Minimum three (3) years of relevant work experience in a professional environment; including law firm experience
d. Robust knowledge of U.S. patent and trademark rules and procedure; knowledge of PCT and/or national IP laws of other countries is a plus
e. Computer proficiency in Google Suite and Windows-based software and Microsoft Office Suite applications including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel; previous experience with Clio is a plus

Paralegal
Role Description
This is a full-time, flexible / hybrid role for a Paralegal at AU LLC at its Chicago, Illinois office. The paralegal will be responsible for legal document preparation, communication with inside and outside counsel and clients, research, and document review. The role will require analyzing discovery production, identifying deficiencies, preparing memoranda, and assisting with IP enforcement activities including evidence collection and organization. The Paralegal will assist the principal attorney, associate attorney, and affiliated counsel.
Qualifications
- Pleading, motion practice, and discovery document preparation and document review skills
- Ability to prepare Rule 33, 34, and 36 requests, Rule 45 subpoenas, and objections and responses thereto
- Persuasive writing skills
- Enjoy independent work
- Research abilities, Westlaw familiarity
- Knowledge of law and legal procedures, particularly Federal Rules of Civil Procedure
- Attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to work effectively in a team
- Minimum 3 years Paralegal experience
- Authorization to work in the United States
